PRETERM LABOR ASSESSMENT For those patients at risk for preterm labor, surveillance using a uterine contraction monitor can be implemented. This service is particularly useful for patients with twins, incompetent cervix, previous preterm labor, previous pregnancy loss and those with third trimester bleeding. The use of oral tocolytics can also be monitored by our perinatal nurse clinicians. This service can be combined with our Home Care services for patients on bedrest. Serial sonographic evaluation of cervical length can also be performed. Cervical Length Surveillance For cases at high risk for preterm labor, serial sonographic measurements of cervical length can be performed with our special wide angle vaginal transducers. Fetal Fibronectin (FFN) FFN is a safe, FDA-approved, effective diagnostic test that assesses the risk of preterm delivery in symptomatic and asymptomatic women. By measuring this biochemical marker, in the vaginal secretions at 22 to 35 weeks of pregnancy, we can help your obstetric health care providers prepare for the possibility of preterm delivery. Women who are candidates for FFN screening include women who are symptomatic with contractions or cervical change, as well as women with a history of prior preterm birth/labor or other situations where screening for increased risk of preterm delivery is warranted. The use of FFN in conjunction with cervical length measurements has proven to be an effective tool for preterm labor screening. |
