GENETIC SERVICES All services are performed by our specially trained staff comprised of perinatal nurse clinicians, ultrasonographers, genetic counselors and registered dietitians. Our Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists review all test results and are available for consultations. All test results are immediately telephoned to the physician's office and a computerized report is mailed the next day. All centers offer day, evening and Saturday hours and participate with a variety of health insurance plans. Genetic Counseling Certified genetic counselors are available by appointment at our Centers and can provide a full range of counseling services for your patients. During the counseling session a detailed genetic family history is taken in order to determine the risks for genetic abnormality in the fetus. Risks, benefits and limitations of the genetic testing procedures are discussed, as well as the options available. Counseling sessions are available Monday through Saturday with day and evening hours. Medical Geneticist Consultation A physician, Board Certified in Medical Genetics, is also available for consultation for less common disorders associated with chromosome abnormalities and for pre-conceptual counseling. Ultrascreen A maternal blood test is combined with an ultrasound measurement to identify fetuses (unborn babies) at increased risk of Down syndrome, Trisomy-18 or -13. These disorders result from an extra chromosome in each cell. The extra chromosome causes birth defects and mental retardation. The risk of having a baby with an extra chromosome disorder increases with the mother's age, but can occur at any age. ULTRASCREEN gives you and your healthcare provider the earliest and most accurate information to most safely assist you in managing your pregnancy. Amniocentesis A complete amniocentesis package is available through our Centers. Genetic counseling is performed by a genetic counselor with a report sent to your physician. If desired, you are scheduled for an amniocentesis which can be performed by your obstetrician, or by one of our Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists. All amniocentesis are performed under sonographic guidance. A report of the sonographic finding and the amniocentesis procedure is sent to your physician. The amniotic fluid is sent to a certified laboratory for chromosomal analysis as well as an Alpha-fetoprotein determination. Results are routinely obtained within 10 working days and are reported immediately to your obstetrician. Early Amniocentesis Amniocentesis at 12 - 14 weeks is also offered. Again, you obstetrician may perform the amniocentesis, or at his request, it will be performed by one of our Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists. You should have Genetic counseling by 10 weeks for early amniocentesis. As with amniocentesis, results are routinely available within 7 - 10 days. Chronic Villus Sampling (CVS) CVS is the latest method for prenatal diagnosis. This may be performed at 10 - 11 weeks by one of our Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists. The patient would be seen by 7 - 8 weeks for genetic counseling. |
